In the past few years Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become commonplace on marketing calendars and shopping day customer experiences in the UK. But have you ever wondered where the names come from?
Allegedly, the term ‘Black Friday’ was borne from the fact that retailers in the United States would report very high profits on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. In bookkeeping, red ink is used to show losses, while black ink shows gains. This tradition has continued with modern accountancy software. This resulted in the name ‘Black Friday’.
Following the last holiday before Christmas, Black Friday has also become known unofficially as the ‘Beginning of the Christmas Shopping Season’.
Black Friday is not set to a particular date. Instead, it falls on the fourth Friday of November. While the following Monday has become known as ‘Cyber Monday’. The two days are now synonymous with two of the busiest shopping days of the year on both sides of the Atlantic.
Cyber Monday was apparently created by marketing companies to persuade people to shop online. In November 2005, The New York Times reported: “The name Cyber Monday grew out of the observation that millions of otherwise productive working Americans, fresh off a Thanksgiving weekend of window shopping, were returning to high-speed Internet connections at work Monday and buying what they liked.”
With profits from online shopping now superseding bricks and mortar shops, the web is awash with special Black Friday and Cyber Monday ‘one-day only’ deals with a full range of discounts on just about any product and service you care to mention. In the tradition of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, MF Communications wish to offer customers a discount on their next order, telephone system trade-in or first month telephone bill or other services. But instead of a ‘one day only’ deal, we would like to extend this offer until 31st December!
